There are
definitely more advantages to being friends with the gays than disadvantages but being a straight, single fabulous woman who
hangs out entirely with gays can become a little lonely. So I did what most single people are doing these
days, I tried my luck at online dating. Full of
hope, I eagerly filled out my personality profile and created a virtual dating life. The great things about
this, I thought, was that I am dating 24/7 while basking in the luxury of sitting on my couch watching
Desperate housewives in my PJ's. I remember
my 20's when I threw men away like Kleenex. This one is too short, too fat, big nose, not funny, bad
in bed. The list goes on and on. I wasted my time dating the stereo typical bad boy. Now
I am digging threw waste basket…where is the guy that was too short? He wasn't really that short….
Or that guy with the lisp? It wasn't really that noticeable, was it?
Well desperate times call for desperate measures. And I am not alone,
just the other day my friend and I finished hiking and went to Applebee's for the all you can eat soup and salad.
In the booth next to us were two girls sharing their lunch. We could hear them talk about how one
of the girls went on a date and how he was "kind of cute" but really nice. My friend and I looked
at each other and laughed.
I think the typical conversation we have with each other is about the terrible
date we had the night before, the one that got away, the one that we still love and compare every new person against. I can
honestly say that if we weren't talking about men, we would not have much to say.
Personally,
my friends love that I do the online dating thing. Not because they want me to find love, but because I
provide them hours of entertainment as I describe in detail, the horror of my dates. Most dates I go on,
I have to make an excuse to leave. "I have to go home and pay bills", I say. But
the truth is, I can't wait to another second to get in my car and call whatever friend that is anxiously awaiting my call.
Last weekend my friends and I went to the horse races.
I am not much of a gambler so I place my educated bets by the name of the horse or the one I think is the prettiest.
You laugh, but I have won a decent amount of money…
Anyway, the first race had
a horse named, Oh, Special Love. Of course I had to put my money on him! He was a long
shot… but isn't finding real love a long shot? My horse did not place, but came in 4th.
He tripped and stumbled over the finish line and had to be removed from the track. My friend turned
to me with a sigh and said, "You can't even bet on love". That got me thinking, Gambling in Vegas and online dating are kind of the same. Either way, you
are looking to win big! But neither Vegas nor dating sites were built on winners. Yet we will continue
to gamble…waiting for the big payout! They are both completely and over the top addictive.
I will continue to go on bad dates, just like sticking a dollar in a slot machine and when I least expect it, I will
win! My girlfriends and I are going to sip
martinis and go to the new movie, "He's just not that into you" We have all read the book,
but a little dose of reality never hurt anyone.
